Land Rover Repair: 98 Discovery Stuck in Park, brake light switch, fuse box

Question
John

My 1998 Discovery is stuck in park. I called my mechanic and he said it maybe something with the brakes since the brake lights are not coming on. Can you tell me if this is something I can fix myself and if so exactly how? or should i get my mechanic to fix it?

I am not really good with car repair so any help you can give wour be great.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Rodney,

here is the method that I am aware of that helps you when your Disco is stuck in park:

Since you do not have lights, check Fuse F1 in the fascia fuse box.  If the fuse always blows, check the terminals on the rear defrost to make sure there is not a short.

Inspect the four wires on the brake light switch above the brake pedal. If switch looks ok, using a small spare wire, jump the green/purple wire and the green/orange wire.  The brake lights should come on and you should be able to shift out of park.  This little fix will leave your brake lights on all the time!  You'll have to visit your LR dealer to have this serviced.

Best of luck,
