Land Rover Repair: Water leaks, auto glass shops, land rover discovery 2

Question
I have a 2001 Land Rover Discovery 2 and there is a water leak in the drivers foot well.
Whe in rains you can see water trickling down the side of the central console.
Where would this water be coming through?

Hi Ian,

I forgot to mention that you should examine the seal around your gearbox shifter.  I think you can do this from inside your Disco.  Once you've removed the shifter cover you can check to see if water is pooling around the area.

On my '95 Disco, I have a leather cover on my 5 speed manual shifter.  I can easily lift this off and see the seal all around the shifter area.  For automatics, this is different.  The shifter lever assembly, central console cover and sound deadner should be removed to expose the top of the gearbox.  This is the most likely area that water is getting in.

Hi Ian,

I have some theories on this matter:

my older '95 Disco has the same problem that you describe and I think it has to do with the various welds around the body of the car.  If possible, examine the undercoating in ALL your wheel wells.  If you see any cracks have them sealed immediately.

Also check the windscreen (windshield) rubber and sealing.  You can do this at most Auto Glass shops for a small price.  I had the local shop reseal my windows with extra sealant and it makes a difference.

Check the engine compartment for any signs of rusting that can lead into the body of the Disco.  I have seen the welds rusting and suspect that water is being kicked up between the wheel well and the fender.

Take a look at the seal between the steal roofing and the four corner posts.  Any cracks?  If yes, seal them.  You may want to gently remove the interior post covers to see if water is trickling down from above.

Here is a website that discusses water ingress:
