Land Rover Repair: Discovery TD5 Misfire, exhaust gas temperature, td5 engine

Question
I have a LR Discovery TD5 which misfires constantly from tickover.  When I remove the cam cover to find which cylinder is misfiring by disconnecting the electrical conectors to the injectors it runs fine for a few miles........then starts misfiring again.
Sometimes when i start the engine it runs fine for a few seconds...then misfires again.
I'm wondering could it be the injector loom.....a dodgy connection??
I'm not fully sure how these injectors work.

Answer
Hi Ivan,

misfires on TD5's are usually associated with injector faults, valve clearances incorrect, low cylinder compressions, fuel tank vent blockage, vacuum leak or fuel regulator fault.

There are various sensors, the exhaust gas temperature sensor is one I've heard about that failed on a TD5 with misfires.

I'd start with the injectors as this is the easiest to clean and test.

Here is a website that details the TD5 engine and the EMS :

http://www.disco2.com/tech/

it has an excellent description and photos too!  It discusses the fuel rail and the importance of keeping it clean.

Best of luck,
