Land Rover Repair: tire changing, lug nuts, impact guns

Question
How do I remove the covers for the lug nuts so I can change the tires?  I have a 1997 Discovery.

Answer
Hi Natalie,

if your lug nuts are the same as mine, and I suspect they are, you don't remove the thin cover that surrounds them.  LandRover has some lug nuts that are covered by a thin, soft cover that should compress when you insert your tire iron socket.  You may have to tap the tire iron onto the lug nuts in order to properly seat it evenly.  Don't be alarmed if the lug nut covers become scratched.  These covers are there for both looks and practicality.  In theory, they are easier to remove from the socket than conventional lug nuts and the scratches are never affected by rust.

SO...

place your tire iron over the lug nut and using a small hammer, lightly tap the tire iron until firmly seated on the lug nut.  Over time, these lug nuts conform to the socket and it should become easier to use.

If this is the first time you've used your tire iron socket on your Disco, its normal to have some difficulty.  Most garage mechanics have hydraulic impact guns and a wide assortment of sockets that make it easier to fit over the lug nuts.

On my '95 Disco, I found the tire iron provided by LandRover to be too soft and difficult to use.  So, I bought a 3/4 inch ratchet bar (18 inches long) and a socket that matches my lug nut size.  Now, I simply tap the socket over the lug nuts and then attach the ratchet afterwards...its so much more easier than the conventional tire iron.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
