I recently purchased a 95 disco, The check engine light was on so I tried disconnecting the battery cables to reset the light. Unfortunately now the car does not start at all. Not sure what it could be, can't find the factory alarm under the dash to check it. is there a reset button or anything I can do to figure this out, can't be this difficult.

Hi Andy,

normally, you only have to disconnect the negative cable to reset any codes.  Perhaps you disconnect both cables and have reconnected then incorrectly.

Make sure the red cable to connected to the positive (+) side of the battery, the black cable to the negative side (-) of the battery.

To full reset your system, disconnect only the negative cable for at least one (1) minute then reconnect. There is 'no factory alarm under the dash' that I am aware of that you can reset other than the service engine reset switch.  I don't think this is the case here.

Let me know otherwise,

thank you for the response especially so rapid.  I purchased a new battery and that solved the problem I do feel kind of stupid though.  But I am curious where the service reset buton is because the check engine light is still on  and the engine runs great so I figure the light is on just to tell you to take it to the dealer for a set mileage check up any answers would be helpful.

Hi Andy,

so it was the battery that failed.  You are lucky.  Most times the alternator gets the worst of it and fails along with the battery.  I'm glad this did not happen to you (like it did me...3 times so far...).

To watch the alternator, keep an eye on your tachometer. If the tach starts to misbehave, most likely its your alternator that's really acting up!

The SERVICE ENGINE reset module is red and found in the passenger footwell behind the panel.  It has a small LandRover label covering a pinhole that hides the reset switch.

IN YOUR CASE, you state its a CHECK ENGINE light...THIS IS VERY DIFFERENT!  Look under the front passenger seat for an OBD reader display and a code should be in plain view.

To see this OBD (on board diagnostic) code, insert and turn your ignition key to the 2nd position (just before you actually turn over the engine).  DON'T turn the engine over and run the motor.

With the key in position II, look at the OBD reader (its red and about the size of carpenter's tape measure or a package of cigarettes).  If you see a code, you can have it translated by going to this website:

http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/generic

You can also send me a note and I'll do what I can to help.

With my '95 Disco, the most frequent code is related to my O2 sensors (oxygen sensors) mounted on my exhaust pipe before the cat. convertors.  I'm sure they need to be replaced ... but right now I'm too busy to deal with them.  The engine is running fine just burning the fuel a bit too rich.  I plan to replace them sometime this summer.

Let me know what you find.  If you are really stuck, most auto parts store know where to look and can translate the codes for you.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
