Land Rover Repair: Disco I electronics-noise in back door, left turn signal, dashboard lights

Question
We've had several problems in our 1997 Disco develop lately that may all be related.  We noticed that whenever we'd turn on the blinkers, we'd hear a noise in the back--maybe in the back door.  About that same time, the speedometer would sometimes drop then recover, although we'd remained at the same speed.  Finally, when the heat gauge indicated that the engine was overheating, we took it to our mechanic, but he said that when he attached the computer, the engine was only at 205 degrees (he said anything under 225 was ok) even though the gauge said otherwise.  Could it be a solenoid or an electrical connection in the back door that's causing the problems?

Hi Gene & Susie,

maintaining older LR's is quite an adventure for owners and their wallets!  My anxiety level rises every time I have to venture into the territory of the dealership.  If I can get a 'handle' on the problem, I can usually do the repairs myself and save a bundle.  However, when it falls into the relm of LR dealership repair....that's like venturing out into deep waters in only a small boat.

Thanks for the comments and I hope your electronic problem is a small one!

Hi Gene & Susie,

This is the first time I've heard of the speedometer dropping and then recovering on a Disco.  Usually, this is a problem with the tachometer which indicates an alternator problem.

I've seen some strange things with my '95 Disco when the rear lights have had electrical problems.  When the right rear brake light shorted out (connector was corroded inside) I lost all my dashboard lights.  When the left turn signal wiring harness became corroded, my turn signals would not work and neither did my radio and window console lights function.

Perhaps you're right about a short circuit somewhere on your Disco.  The short is being picked up by your subwoofer in the back door.  Knowing that older Disco's can have corroded electrical wiring, I'd start to investigate those areas that are most likely to have problems:

All wire harnesses and connectors on the rear door (a problem area for water ingress)
All light connectors underneath the vehicle in both the rear and front.
Sidemarker light connectors (I've see this many times) - make sure to remove the bulb and inspect inside the connector for rust

As for your engine indicating overheating, I'd keep an eye on this.  You may have a failing thermostat or a coolant blockage.  To be safe, I'd replace the thermostat and flush out and replace all the coolant.  This is an inexpensive repair and if I'm wrong....well, you'll error on the side of caution.  Overheat your engine and you'll move into the $000's category of repair.

Best of luck,

JohnMc

NB:  if you can find an experiened auto electrician, most can locate short circuits very quickly.
