Land Rover Repair: 2003 Discovery gear shift problem., linkage problem, shift problem

Question
I recently bought the Disco used with 88K miles.  It runs well but has just started to become difficult to get into park and remove the key.  It requires excessive pressure on the shift lever both to remove the key and to use the key to engage the starter.  The P indicator lamp does not illuminate unless the lever is pushed forward hard.

I suspect (hope?) it is just a linkage/shift cable adjustment/wear problem but would like an expert opinion and suggestions how to test and adjust it if that is the likely cause.

Answer
Hi Phil,

on such a 'new' vehicle, I'd take it to your local LR dealer and have them do the adjustments.  Don't wait too long, you could have more damage done or find yourself unable to start the Disco.  Sounds very much like a linkage problem - from where I'm sitting. :)

While at the dealership, register yourself as the new owner with LR.  You'll then get any recall notices and can find out what service has been done on your Disco since new.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
