Land Rover Repair: Replacement Radiator Series II, discovery series ii, replacement radiator

Question
John,
I have a 2002 Discovery Series II SE, just had a full service done and they said I need a new radiator.  They wanted $1100 to replace, so I decided to do it myself.  My question is I am torn between the Land Rover original part at $700, or buying an aftermarket OEM part made by Behr or Nissens for anywhere between $199-$435 depending on the website ordered from.  Same part number G1000-110633 at every website, just different prices.  In the past, on other makes of cars, I have always used aftermarket OEM parts with great success, but I am new to Land Rovers and was somewhat nervous about aftermarket parts.  What do you think?

P.S.  I had the "Three Amigos" on in my Land Rover when it went in to be serviced, I needed a new speed sensor at $82 dollars, with labor it came to $275.  They also replace a factory recall on the ABS modulator, can't remember the specifics, and don't have the receipt in front of me.

Hi Greg,

the rad install is usually very easy to do.  The only difficulty is with the fan blade.  Careful with this as it can break very easily.  After install, make sure you flush the system of all air.  The last thing you want is trapped air in an engine that runs normally on the hot side!

Best of luck, I'm sure you can do this.

Hi Greg,

glad the 3 Amigos problem was resolved for under $300.  Another owner wrote that his dealer charged him $2500 to replace the entire ABS modulator.  RIP OFF!

As for aftermarket parts...go for it!  I've had good results from these parts and reach for them as often as I can.  In your case, Nissens seems like a good choice.

If you can buy the part from aftermarket, go right ahead.

Best of luck with the rad install.
