Land Rover Repair: 98 Disco engine clicking sound, diagnostic charge, valve job

Question
My 98 Disco SE7 has 90,000 miles on it and recently a metallic
clicking sound can be heard coming from the engine. The
clicking speeds up as the engine speeds up. It used to do it only
when the engine was first started, but now it does it all the time.
Two different mechanics said they thought it could be a problem
with a "lifter" but they couldn't really accurately diagnose the
problem without taking the engine apart which would cost
around $500 just to get the diagnosis. They said if it is a lifter it
could cost $2,500 to $3,000 to repair. Does this sound like a
"lifter" problem or could it be something else? The engine runs
strong with no loss of power. It just has that metallic clicking
sound all the time.
Thanks for your help

Answer
Hi George,

are you sure the sound is from the engine?  Some mechanics use a stethescope to isolate the sound.

$2500 to $3000 for a lifter is very expensive.  I'm sure you could find a euro-mechanic that can do the job for much less.  I don't think they have to replace all the lifters...I'll check this out and get back to you on that point.

If left unaddressed, the problem could get worse and lead to even more damage to the engine.

I know that 4.0 engines have a problem with sticking exhaust valves and a valve job runs about $2000US.  IF it is the exhaust valves, you would experience power loss on long trips and when the engine gets overheated.

Unless you are mechanically inclined, you are at the mercy of LR mechanics.  Perhaps you can have the mechanic overlook the $500 when he does the diagnostic.  Once the engine is opened up and it is revealed that its a lifter or a sticking valves, have them do the job.  More than likely, they'll overlook the diagnostic charge and bill you just for the repair - if you propose this in advance.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
