Land Rover Repair: TC/DownHill/ABS lights on, bleeding brakes, braking distances

Question
I saw your posting on the subject and wanted to know what others have done and what final suggestions you have. I have a 99 Series II that has only 29K miles.
Under normal road driving all three lights lite. Cutting the engine and turning it restores it to normal.

I took the vehicle to the dealer. They ran the diags and reported a single fault (11,4:Shuttle value switch electrical failure.)

They recoomended the following:
1) replacement of ABS modulator assembly that cost 2.5K
2) Bleed brakes and clean all connectors which has 5% success.

What do you think?. Could it be a wheel sensor that needs replacement and not the whole assembly?. Also, any places that sell used assemblies that could save me money? I checked everywhere for recall on this from LR but no success.

Appreciate any thoughts and also finally since it happens once in a while what are the implications if i continue to drive.

Aqua.

Answer
Hi Aqua,

its a shame that your low mileage Disco is having this problem.  What's even worse is the response that LR is giving to LR owners who are plagued by this.

For some, if they choose to ignore it, the suspension system is affected and it may affect braking distances.  For others, they remove the lights from behind the dash and continue without a worry.

Often times, its a wheel sensor that is causing the trouble.  Bleeding brakes and general cleaning rarely solves this problem.  There are just too many owners complaining of this problem and being forced to purchase a new ABS modulator.

One owner in the US has had enough.  While under warranty, the LR dealership would replace one wheel sensor.  Several months later, the three amigo's would return and the dealership would replace another sensor.  Eventually, the Disco's warranty expired.  Lo and behold:  the 3 lights returned and that's when the dealership decided to change the ABS modulator.

Of course, now that the warranty is expired, the cost is placed in front of the owner.  He is now starting a class action law suit and you can contact him at:

Send him an email and see what he has to say.  I don't know the latest about his class action, so maybe you can give me an update after you contact him.

Perhaps, armed with this info, you can DISCUSS the matter with your dealership and see if they are willing to help you with the costs.  I can't believe that a Disco with such low miles is having this problem.  Clearly, LR has to do something about this.

I've been having ABS problems since I purchased my '95 Disco.  Although I don't have the HDC and TC option that your series II Disco has, I am still plagued by the ABS problem.  In my opinion, its a design flaw that has been carried from the series I to the series II.  It just makes no sense that so many Disco (Range Rovers too) have ABS problems.

I rarely hear about Ford or GM vehiles with ABS failures.

Best of luck with this, Aqua,

JohnMc
