Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): redmax backpack blower, center tube, air leak

Question
QUESTION: I am fixing a Red Max blower for someone and it will not start with the choke when it's cold. It has a new carburetor on it because the center tube in the old one was split and allowing to much fuel in at high speed. The jet in the new carb is to big so I have one on order but that should not affect the starting. It will start fine when it's warm and. Cold you have to give it a shot of gas down the air cleaner. It is a model 7001 and has a wrt walbrow carb on it. Thanks for any help.

ANSWER: Have you checked the engine compression?  If you have to give it a shot of fuel directly into the air cleaner then there is not enough fuel to start the engine.

Is there an air leak in the intake system?  Can you completely block off the carb intake, with your finger, to see if you can start it without priming?  Blocking the carb nozzle should force more fuel in the enigne.

Let me know.

QUESTION: I am thinking compression to. Do you know what it should be? Blocking off the carb will not force enough fuel in to start. I can not find a spec on the compression limits.

ANSWER: It should have at least 125 PSI to run good.  Redmax, being a better unit, should have more.

Will the blower idle once you get it running?

QUESTION: The blower runs good once it is started and fires right up one pull when it's warm. I do know the carb has a jet that is to big and it is flooding it out on the high idle. I have a new jet ordered but that should not affect starting and ideling. The owner came to get the unit back yesterday so I don't have it to test. As soon as the jet comes in hell bring it back. http://www.redmax.com/ddoc/RMXI/RMXI2004_USen/RMXI2004_USen_EB7001RH,0408_.pdf  This if the parts list for that blower. I hate these carbs no adjustments on them. thanks

Answer
Yeah, I have had trouble with those carbs as well.  Had a couple I never could fix...just replaced the whole carb.

Just for grins, will the engine start with the choke on if you remove the muffler.  I doubt there are any issues with the spark arrestor since it runs fine once warm but it is worth a try as the muffler is easy to remove.

Do you have a compression gauge?  Do you know what pressure testing the crankcase is?
