Land Rover Repair: torque and vibration, high mileage, valve job

Thanks for the help...I never had any mention of a valve job...should I investigate that further?
Either way, I caved in and took it to dealer...quoted $640 to correct ABS sensor and remove 3 amigo fault lights--is that possible?  Their other suggestion is to replace spark plugs/wires and MAF. I have a trusted (non Landrover) mechanic, is this something he can figure out?  or, again, leave it to dealership to correct?  Lastly, you mentioned a fault found with another disco as speed transducer--after dealer's "insight", is this a solution I still might want to pursue?

Thanks for your time

Answer
Hi Cole,

try the ABS problem first.  It is possible that sensors could be the root of your troubles.  Premature braking could be the reason why you were experiencing vibrations from all over.

As for valve job...it depends on how much mileage you have and how hard you drive your Disco.  High mileage on a Series II, a ticking noise and lack of power when under load, rough idle during humid hot days...this is the sign that valves are sticking.  Vibrations are rare but possible.

The spark plugs, wires and MAF are something anyone can change.  The MAF is about $650 new ($300 rebuilt) - add LR labour and you are looking at $800+ .

As for the transducer, mention it to your dealer and they will use the testbook to see if it is a possible cause.  A dealer can easily bench test this to see if its in working condition.

Best of luck,
