Land Rover Repair: 99 Land Rover Discovery Series II, auto glass shop, land rover discovery

Question
I have a few problems with my Discovery that I hope you can help me with because my knowledge of cars is minimal.  It is currently leaking water and I can't seem to find where it is coming from.  Also, my locks seem to stick.  The driver's door I have to open with the key and the back seat locks stick often.  The back door also sticks and I have to use a screwdriver to close it most of the time.  The handle just won't go down.  Also, my passenger rear window does not roll up all the way, or at least it seems that way because I hear wind coming through constantly but it appears to be up all the way.  I realize these are a lot of questions, but any advice you could give me on any of these questions I would greatly appreciate.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Drew,

these problems are all very common to our Disco's.  Not many owners can say they have not experienced at least one of your Disco's woes.

The water ingress problem is a real nuisance.  Here is a website that can help you isolate some of the leaks:
http://homepage.virgin.net/mark.hopkins2/WaterIngress.htm

Mark has made available LR techsheets on the subject of water ingress and they are very good.  One leak not mentioned comes from around the windshield on some Disco's.  You can approach an auto glass shop and pay them to  remove and re-install your windshield while looking for possbile leakage areas.

In my case, a very large and nasty rock had smashed my windshield and that's when I had the auto glass pro's clean an remove the rust all around the window frame.  I then had them replace the rubber gaskets/seals and use a silicone sealant along the top of the windshield frame and underneath the rubber seal.

It has reduced the amount of water ingress but I still have this problem.  Eventually, I'll find that leak.

As far as your door's, you should purchase some lithium white grease and lubricate all the working (moving) parts to your door, latches and locks.  It is possbile to adjust the locks but you have to remove the door panel to get at this.  There are products that spray lubricants and this could help too BUT the white grease is thicker, lasts longer is water proof.

The window problem is usually associated with the window ECU module.  Its possible that your window actuator is failing.  LR could probe the actuator to determine if it is getting the right amount of voltage to function.  It would be quicker to have them find the trouble than if you or I did this.  LR knows where to look and usually can isolate the trouble within a day at most.

The wind noise you hear may be the weatherstrip around your doors.  They tend to slip down over time. You can open your door and see if the stripping hangs at any one particular spot.  Its not easy, but you can push the weatherstriping back onto the door frame area

Best of luck with these troubles...

JohnMc
