Land Rover Repair: SRS Light, discovery series ii, dashboard lights

Question
Hi.  I have a 99 Discovery Series II with the SRS light on.  I've taken to a dealer and they told me it was the Driver Seat belt that needs to be replaced.  Had it done, moved out of state and now the light is back-it's only been 2 weeks.  I also noticed the light went out when one of the brake lights went out.  Replaced the brake light bulb and the SRS light is back on.  Also the brake light is not a bright as the other.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Jerry,

ahh, the wonderous works of Lord Lucas electrics!  You may indeed have a problem with your SRS and only your local LR dealer can read off the code and TRY to locate the cause.  Since you've already had a dealer service this, you may want to contact LRNA (US/Canada head office) and arrange a followup visit at a dealer nearest you.  If you are fortunate, the followup repair may be free since the first visit was a bust!

As for the brake light and its interaction with your SRS dash light, yes this is possible too!  I've had my dashboard lights wink out due to a a rear brake light not functioning.  Its LR's twisted way of saying 'hello! we have a problem with the rear light over here!'.

Once the fuse, bulb, wire of connector is repaired, the dashboard lights return to normal.  In your case, my guess is that the rear brake light (could be bulb holder shorting out - common problem) caused just a few dashboard lights not to function.  More specifically, your SRS light was not functioning because it was not getting the required electricity due to circuit interference from the failing brake light fault.  I've seen this a few times.

Take a look at the wiring and the bulbholder for the brake light in question.  IF the contacts within the connector are rusting out (common on older Disco's) it can cause problems like this.  It could also we a problem within the wiring harness.  You'll have to poke 'n probe for electrical faults.  No fear of a closed circuit in the rear around the brake lights, it will just take awhile to find the problem wire or connector.

Best of luck with this,
