Land Rover Repair: Alarm Remote, land rover discovery, key fob programming

Question
I bought a 1994 Land Rover Discovery used, it has a factory alarm system, but it had no remote with it.  I bought a remote from a dealer, however, it will not work.  I don't know whether I need to program it or what.  Can you help me.

Answer
Hi Jason,

glad to welcome you to LR ownership.  I wish you luck with your '94 Disco.   I own a '95 Disco and they are very similar.  My first advise is to find a repair manual for your Disco.  I suggest the Haynes "Land Rover Discovery" repair manual #3016.  It is a good book for those who can do some repairs or have an interest in learning about their Disco.  Plenty of photos and excellent guides to the DIY'er.  For more detailed repair information, I suggest the LR repair manuals from Land Rover.  You can find them on-line or order them from your dealer.

As for your remote key fob programming, I will send you a follow-up with the necessary procedures.  It requires two people to perform, one to reset the hood (bonnet) switch to the engine compartment, the other to perform the programming sequence.

A word of warning, the programming may not work if the security system has component problems.  If the master unit, the immobiliser, has any faults (and this can happen over time) the programming sequence may not work.  You will have to have the LR dealer fix the problem and it could be expensive.  The immobiliser (or Spider) is within the dashboard and is labour intensive ($$ cha-ching! $$).

I'll send a followup as soon as possible...right now I'm off to a meeting.

Regards,

JohnMc

NB: long standing tradition is to name your Disco...our family decided on "Simba".  A friend of mine named his "Spot" as it has a nasty habit of leaking oil.  He says its "marking its territory".  Ha!

Note 1:  Must be carried out in 8 seconds to access learn mode. Best done with two people. You should have both remotes available or second one will not work.

Note 2:  If you only have one remote program it twice.

Open hood and have assistant hold hood alarm switch down.

From inside car, with all doors closed, ignition off and all lock buttons up:

Turn ignition on then off (no need to actually start car);

Cycle drivers door button down then up (manually lock driver's door);

Assistant now releases hood switch;

Turn ignition on then off;

If done correctly, horn will beep once and dash LED will light up. This indicates the learn mode has been accessed. If this doesn't happen repeat 1 through 6.

From inside car, push and hold first remote. The dash LED should flash 8 cycles a second for one second indicating that the code was received. If this does not happen repeat steps 1 through 6 again.

Push and hold the second remote, if the code is received the dash LED will flash 8 cycles indicating that the code was received. If this does not happen repeat 1 through 8 again.

Note: Turning the ignition on at any time will cancel the learning process. The system can only store two remote codes and must be done at the same time. If you only have one remote program it twice.

Best of luck, Jason.
