Land Rover Repair: Unable to start vehicle without alarm going off, rangie, range rover

I have a 2001 Range Rover SE. Serviced regularly by the local dealer. Just recently my remote will not unlock the car and when I use the key for manual entry the alarm goes off and disengages the engine leaving me stranded...what is causing the malfunction?
