Land Rover Repair: engaging differential lock, high gears, low gears

Question
i'm trying to work if i've something wrong with my '85 110 v8 or if it is me as a newbie 110
landrover owner.

The setup in my series 3 110 (as far as the gear chain controls are concerned) is a gear stick that consists 4 forward gears a one reverse, and a low and high ratio lever situated under the drivers seat.

What is the procedure to engage the central differential lock for offroad running and what is the procedure for returning the vehicle to a non-offroad unlocked diff. (sounds simple but i can't find this info anywhere) - try as I might i can't lock the central diff ?

thanks

Answer
Hi Klarien,

not owning a 110 or having any owners manuals, here is what I do with my '95 Disco:

to lock the diff, I put my Disco into neutral, move the diff shifter to lock then shift into 1st.  Normally, the diff lock icon appears on my dash and all four wheels move in unison.  I rarely do this on pavement and only on gravel, grass or mud.  I never take the Disco above 25 or 30 mph while the diff is locked in low.

To return to high gears (solid pavement et.al), I suggest you stop the vehicle, engage neutral, shift into high then engage your 110 as you would normally do.  Always start from neutral when locking or unlocking the diff.

Never drive your 110 on pavement with a locked diff in low gears. I've been told you'll overheat the gearbox and tranny.  Keep the speed under 30mph (50km/h).

Best of luck,

JohnMc
