Land Rover Repair: Discovery Mk 2 drinks holders, needle nose pliers, ash tray

Question
Hi John
The sliding drinks holders beneath the climate control panel on my 2001 TD5 have come right out. After several hours with brusied knuckles I still can't see how they fit in. The problem seems to be the 'A' spring located at the back of the slot. I assume this must locate somewhere at the back of the drinks holder enabling 'touch' action.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Phil,

this is a rather nasty little job that comes up once in awhile.  The best way to repair this is to remove the cupholder completely and see how it works.  Remove the coin tray and ash tray to reveal 3 screws behind each.  Remove these screws and pull out cupholder.  Be careful.  That plastic cupholder is about $120.

I thought the 2001 had two nice individual cup holders on either side of the shifter console?  I always found the dash cupholder to very fragile and I rarely use it.  I too have had my share of hours trying to reset the A spring with long needle nose pliers.

Once you have the cupholder removed, carefully examine where the spring sits to make sure that no guides have been broken (common problem).

Best of luck,

JohnMc
