Land Rover Repair: 2000 Disco ABS Hill Descent & TC Prob, auto parts stores, traction control

Question
My 2000 Disco ABS, Hill Descent and Traction Control lights are on. Im pretty sure that I need new brakes but could this be causing these lights to be on?  They have been squeaking for a while now.  And also do you have any tips for replacing the brakes.  I plan on doing it myself.  Thanks for your time

Answer
Hi Jonathan,

the ABS, HDC & TC lights (aka 3 amigos) seems to be a common problem with newer Disco II's.  The cause ranges from faulty sensors to actual problems detected with suspension, brakes or the ecu that monitors them.  In the UK a recall was supposedly performed.  Here in the N.America, you'll have to rely upon LRNA to diagnose what could be causing those 3 lights to trigger at the same time.

As for you brakes, changing the pads is a simple procedure and all 4 can be done in a couple of hours.  Make sure you replace the pins and springs along with the pads.  You can get a kit from your local LR parts department.  Most auto parts stores have aftermarket pads for your Disco.  I prefer Raybestos pads.

Changing the rotors will take longer than just the pads.  Do this in pairs, front rotors, back rotors or all 4 rotors at once.  While you are replacing the rotors you can pack new grease into the bearing area and examine the half-axle for wear.

Do one side at a time.  If you make a mistake in the order of re-installing the new rotors, you have the other side as an example to correct yourself.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
