Land Rover Repair: Sudden strange electrical problems, fog lights, door switch

Question
Hi John.  Thanks for the info.  I also just noticed that both my carpets up front are soaking wet.  The evening before this started I had a car wash that had underbody wash as well.  I have not been using the AC as well.  Could this have caused a problem with the BCU or another module?  Also, where is the BCU and is there any way to check its operation with a multimeter?  If I can determine it is the BCU then I can replace it myself.  I went to that site you mentioned, but it needed a subscription for schematics.

Thanks for all your help.
Kevin

Ok...so I am camping up in Boundary Waters, MN by the CA/US border. Everything was fine the day before. Locked the 00 DiscoII for the night. In the morning, the FOB would not open the doors. So I used the key to open the driver door, but the dashboard door switch would not unlock the doors.

After checking all the fuses, I decided to manually open all the doors. Then unplug the battery (both in the FOB and the car) for a minute to see if something needed to be reset. Nothing worked.

Car started fine, but when I tried to put it in drive, it was locked. I checked the brake switch and it seemed like the brake pedal was not pushing the plunger in. This was confirmed when I noticed the brake lights were always on. So theoretically the gear lock should not be engaged.

Then I notice that only the back two windows would not lower, the front/back fog lights would not work and the turn signals blinked in the dash, but did not light or blink outside. All other things worked such as lights, radio, AC, Cruise, wiper, seats, front windows, sunroof, gas door, etc. I was able to get it into drive by manually pushing in the pin that locks it under the console.

So.....does anyone know what the heck might have caused this sudden problem?

*The FOB will engage the alarm system, but not lock the doors.
*Door switch does not work.
*Gear lock does not disengage without manually pushing the pin in.
*Turn signals do not work
*Rear windows do not work
*Brake pedal does not seem to come all the way up to press the brake switch in. I used duct tape on the brake pedal arm to make up for this to get home. Is the Brake Switch plunger not coming all the way out, or the pedal not coming all the way up? Why would that suddenly occur along with everything else?

I would hate to spend $$$$$ in labor for a dumb $20 sensor part that controls all this if I can do it myself. Please help cause this is British sense of humor crazy : )

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

It sounds like you have a failure in the bodycontrol module.  You are welcome to go to www.landrovertechinfo.com and download the wiring diagrams to troubleshoot this but it's very hard to do without the LR test system, which we use to monitor switches and activate lights and motors, etc.

I really think the dealer may be the best bet for you.

If the fob programming is lost there is nothing you can do at home, also.

It is possible that there is an independent LR specialist with the skills and tools to help with this near you.  Look at the list on www.rangerovers.net or www.bushducks.com

good luck,'

The BCU is under the seat, and it's tough to test without the dedicated LR test system.  You have to have the system to configure a new one.

I really don't think you are going to get anywhere without a tester, so I think a properly equipped svc ctr is the only option.  Otherwise you end up testing wiring forever.  You would have to manually test all the signals going into the BCU, and then manually measure the outputs to figure out what was happening.  With the LR tester we can get that informaiton in minutes.  With hand testing it will take hours.  And you will not be able to force outputs on or off, so you may still end up at a brick wall.

The LR site is a subscription site, at $18 for a day access.
