Land Rover Repair: I cant shift out of Park, land rover dealer, brake light switch

Question
My shifter is stuck in park??  It want move at all, I called my local Land Rover dealer(Austin,TX) and they said that the brake switch more than likely went out. I got a new switch replaced the $25 switch and NO LUCK??  Its a 99 Disco 2 the only way I'm able to move the truck is to get under the truck manually move the shifter into drive with the parking brake on and somebody else pushing the brake.  I think there is something wrong in the shifter and its about a 40 min. tow into the dealer.  Could the shifter cable be frozen, were I can't see it??

Thanks for the help,
Brandon Smith

Also, how would we see if there is a recall in the states about the 3 light ABS system failure.

Answer
Hi Brandon,

here is a very quick fix that you could consider as a bandaide solution until you can get to a LR dealer.

Open the rear door

While being careful not to damage the rear window heating elements, remove and swap the two wires closest to the door hinges.

Close the door and start the engine.

Switch on the rear window heater, which will no longer work, however, the saftey interlink from the brake pressure switch is now disabled.

You can now shift out of Park.

This quick fix works because the third rear stop light, mounted on the glass at the top of the rear window, works off the same power source.

This fix is good for Disco II's.   Clearly, a brake switch solenoid problem.

For Disco I's and RR Classics:

Check to see if you have stoplights. If you do not have lights, check:

Fuse F1 in the fascia fuse box. (Discovery, if the fuse blows, check the terminals on the back window grids making sure they are not touching each other causing a short. They get bent easily).

Inspect the brake light switch on the brake pedal (the brake light switch has four wires on it and the cruise switch has two wores and a vacuum line on it).

If switch is intact jump the green/purple wire and the green/orange wire; the brake lights should come on enabling the shift out of park.

Caution! The brake lights will be on all the time. Have problem repaired as soon as possible. Also, you may get an ABS fault stored.

If you have stoplights:

Pop the top of the shift lever off and check to see if the clip on the button is intact. They have been know to come off and not lift the rod in the handle.

1992-1994 Range Rover Classic: Same as above except - Dash fuse box, Fuse B1 and jump wires: white/purple and green/purple at brake light switch# AMR2010G.

Recalls:

As far as I know, this are some recalls that affect some of the components:
