Land Rover Repair: Range Rover electrical, throttle position sensor, range rover classic

Question
I have a 1995 Range Rover classic. I have noticed that sometimes when coming to a stop or idleing at a red light the vehicle will cut itself off. It is seemingly an electrical problem because it can happen very quickly. I can ususally detect it however, by watching the rpm's dip and if I catch it in time by giving it gas it won't cut out. I can also be driving at speed at times listening to the radio and all of a sudden it will cut off(the radio) and there will be a quick but severe dip in the tach. Any ideas? The shop has checked the idle and replaced the sensor before, but it didn't help. When the car does cut off it will restart with no problem.

Answer
Hi Drew...strange I thought I sent a response to this question already.  AllExperts still list this question as unanswered...hmmm.  I'll do this again...

Not sure which engine you have BUT I've had this problem in my '95 Disco.  I don't suspect an electrical problem but think it could be related to the TPS (throttle position sensor) sending incorrect feedback to the ECU.

The radio cutting out could be your engine stalling and the subsequent drop in elect power.

4.0 engines have had exhaust valve problems that result in loss of power, misfires and stalling but I don't know if this is your trouble.  Only cure for the 4.0 is a valve job (ouch).

I think it is fuel or firing related unless you have some weird electrical short somewhere.  A good auto electrician could determine if you have a grounding problem or short somewhere on your Rangie.

Timing faults may also cause this problem.

Best of luck,
