Land Rover Repair: 98 Disco lock problem, alarm sensor, release button

Question
The keyless handset signal has been weak recently. Not working, having to be right at the door to get it to work, etc. Now, it just activates the alarm, and when i hit the lock button it locks the doors then they autmatically open again. Also, the alarm will go off when it doesn't seem to be armed when i try and start the car sometimes. I can't lock the car via handset, and now key won't lock it either.
It seems to be more than just handset battery-

Answer
Hi Jay,

this is a problem with the security system ECU.  I've seen this before on my '95 and the dealer advised me to bring it in for repair.  Cha-Ching $$$. They reprogrammed the key fob and it worked for several months ... only to return to haunt me (or taunt me).

Causes:

Sometimes the fob button sticks and burns out the circuit; the alarm system immobiliser is failing (crapping out); the RF sync between alarm sensor and key fob have lost contact or is loosing contact.

Possible fixes:

new immobiliser - big bucks
new key fob(s) - $100 to $200
reprogram of system - $75

I can give you the reprogramming sequence for the single button key fob.  The two button key fob I don't have and don't know.

Send me a follow up note if you have a single btn key fob.

Best of luck,

JohnMc

NB:  I think reprogramming requires two people, one to push down the hood release button in engine compartment; one to do the actual sequence of door locks, ignition keys, key fob buttons.  Kind of weird sequence...but thats LR for you!
