Land Rover Repair: LAND ROVER DASH LIGHTS, land rover dealer, dashboard lights

Question
I have a '96 Discovery. When I started the car tonight the instrument panel lights failed to light. I checked what I thought was the correct fuse (14) but got no results. There is no Land Rover dealer here. Suggestions?

Answer
Hi Jimmy,

This will sound strange BUT I can only tell you this based on my own experience.   It is quite possible that you have a blown bulb somewhere on your Disco.  This past spring, I had lost all the dashboard lights on my Disco and all the fuses looked ok.  I had had previous problems with the turn signal not working and it was determined that a rear turn signal bulb was blown.  The moment I replace it, the turn signal worked fine.
So, the dashboard lights ALL went out and I suspected that a bulb must have been blown somewhere.  Turned out that the bulbholder of the front RH sidemarker was shorting out and this was causing the problem.

I would suggest you check all the bulbs and their sockets to see if one is blown or shorting out.  Check both the main fuse box and the aux.box in the engine compartment.  A euro-mechanic should be familiar enough with LUCAS electronics and be capable to do the searching if you are not.

I wish you luck with this.  I doubt very much that all the bulbs in you dashboard or instrument panel are blown...it has to be something that is linked in series with this.  Probably located somewhere in the front of the Disco.

Regards,

JohnMC
