Land Rover Repair: disco noise, transmission clutches, rear view mirror

Question
hi,
I just bought a 2000 Discovery with ACE package.  It starts, runs and manuvers fine...however, after putting it in drive I hear a "thunk" sound about 100 yards down the road.  The first week I owned it, I kept looking in my rear view mirror thinking I ran over something small/harmless. The noise is under the car.  I can almost predict when the sound will come and it ONLY does it after initial  engine start and putting it into drive.  Not at stop lights, etc...
What the heck it this?  Should I be concerned?  I'm waiting for the axel to fall off or something...

Answer
Hi J,

it could be transmission related.  Hard to tell from here. It could be as the speed increases, something is not slipping into position properly. Do you think it could be a loose brake caliper?

I suggest you have it inspected by a dealer and have them determine if its your transmission, flywheel or even a loose component.

I have read about manual transmission clutches making noises in the low gears but usually this noise reduces as the clutch is broken in.

Go to the dealer and have them isolate the noise.  It may cost you but it will give you peace of mind.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
