Land Rover Repair: 2000 Discovery Series Indicator Light Issue, land rover discovery, discovery series ii

Question
John:

I actually explored around the site and found the history of Q&A.  It appears others have had this problem.  In one response, somebody answered that it was a problem with ABS module and that that module needed to be replaced at a cost of around $1900 to $2500.  Does that sound familiar?  The San Jose CA Land Rover dealer had the truck in the shop for almost a week when I originally reported this and claimed to not have found any issues except perhaps a bent connector pin.  That's obviously not the problem!  The faulty ABS module at least has a ring of truth.

When I reported the problem, the truck was still within warranty and they told me that if they could find the cause later, that they would cover the repair under warranty.  If it is the ABS module and the replacment is that costly, then getting them to admit to this might be dificult.  I'd be interested in hearing if somebody encountered this problem and had LR fix it!

I saw your response to another question on this and think you have missed the mark.  I too have a 2000 Land Rover Discovery Series II.  At about 55K miles I encountered the problem where the hill descent control, ABS and traction control indicator lights all come on simulataneously and will stay on until the car turns off.  When you start the car, all is well, but then it will all come on again...maybe 10 minutes later, maybe 10 days laters.  Once on, the lights will stay on until the car ignition is turned off.

I maintain my truck very well.  I took it into the shop and they kept it for about week and could not figure out what was wrong.  They contacted the factory etc... to no help.  Evenually they told me that the problem was a bent lead in the connector and sent the truck home.  Well, a week later, the problem reappeared and been with me for the last 18 monthss on and off.

Land Rover tell me to bring it in when the lights are on and they will check it out again.  But of course, the lights are never on when I have a scheduled service and the nearest landrover dealer is 30 miles away and I can't drop everything during the week to take it to the shop when the lights come on.

My brakes and suspension are fine.  There is something else wrong here and it seems others have encountered the same problem.  Any other ideas?

Hi Kyle,

let me find some follow-up information on this subject.  Having a Disco I, the chances of me understanding the woes of electronic drivetrain is a bit difficult.  I'll ask around to see if there is updated info and get back to you as soon as I can.

Answer
Kyle,

I hope you got that LR promise in writing.  These elusive problems are often very expensive and I have yet to see a LR dealer admit fault and absorb the cost of repair...on anything!

ABS module problems have been around since my Disco '95 first rolled on the asphalt.  My sensor is "too sensitive" was what I was told once.  "You'll have to replace the entire system to fix this" was another response.

I'll get back to you as soon as I get some pertinent info.
