Land Rover Repair: Check Engine light, mass air flow meter, mass air flow

Question
I've got a re-curring check engine light. The code that was set is a P1179 I've looked into it a little, but I'm not sure what it is for. I'm leaning towards a MAF sensor ,but since those things are a bit expensive, I'm reluctant to buy one just because I "think" it's the problem. What do you think?

Answer
Hello,

You are correct with the code pertaining to the Mass Air Flow Meter.

Try a couple of things first.  I assume you know the location.(inline with the tube running from the air filter box and the intake, black plastic usually plug with 5-6 wires.)
1.  disconnect the plug and clean the terminals with some contact cleaner spray
2.  Remove the MAF and clean the inside even down in the open slots inside with some Brake Cleaner aerosol, any brand. Let dry and clean again. There is a wire that heats to 600 degreesF and this is how the air flow is determined. This wire gets crusty dirty. Let it dry completelyand reinstall.
3. If this does not work check with your deal for any ECM updates taht may be needed. If not then replace The MAF.

By the way I assume this is a Disco 1996-1999.

Hope this helps .Write me anytime

Thanx, Dave
