Land Rover Repair: Land Rover Steering, steering boxes, universal joints

Question
Hi
My '85 110, power steering, has developed steering shimmy. It is fine on corners, but when traveling straight the steering wheel tends to lose contact with the wheels. I've tightened the steering box and that got rid of the travel in the shaft, but still hasn't removed the wobble. Is this a steering box problem?

It's a three-bolt steering box, does that mean I have to replace with a three-bolt?

I've heard that I can replace with a Discovery steering box, is this true?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Simon,

examine the steering column universal joints.  I've been told that the lowest bolt can come loose allowing the universal joint to move on the steering box splines.

As for using a Disco steering box as a replacement, this is quite possible.   Many parts are interchangeable.

Recently, I had a new clutch installed on my Disco.  The mechanic told me that there were known problems with Disco series I clutches, so he ordered and installed a clutch used in Defenders.  They were built better and are compatible.

I've also found out that 3rd party steering boxes can be very leaky and use up lots of fluid.  One owner advised me to stick to OEM LandRover steering box for an easy installation that is reliable.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
