Land Rover Repair: Transfer Case noise, shaft bearings, range rover classic

Question
91 Range Rover Classic with BorgWarner transfer case
I have a noise which is relative to the speed I'm moving which sounds like something hitting metal repetitively. At first I thought it was a CV joint which gave out, but I ruled that out. It is coming from the Transfer case. I can feel it in the L/H shifter. All functions work correctly (goes into Low and high, reverse, etc). The noise is faster when in Low. I'm suspecting the transfer case chain, but would like to know before I start that project. The problem came on suddenly, and luckly I only had 1 mile to go to get home. The only noise I have heard from the transfer case is a whine when I let off the throttle at high speed. Any ideas ?

Answer
Hi Paul,

If your CV joint was failing, you'd hear a clunking or crunching sound when you first engage forward or reverse. Eventually, you'd loose the ability to move your Rangie unless you "lock in" your differential.

Hearing noise in L or H positions can indicate chipped or damaged gear teeth in the transfer gearbox. If the noises are present in neutral or with engine running at high speeds could be a worn mainshaft or output shaft bearings.

Metallic grinding that increases with speed could be related to universal joint bearings.

Replacing the entire unit is easy enough for a DIY'er but expensive ($2900).  Perhaps a local tranny shop can perform an overhaul job and save you $$$.

Best of luck with this, Paul.
