Lexus Repair: power steering noise, power steering problems, power steering fluids

Question
yeah i know, its just an expensive car though and im worried that i may spend extra again.

what would be the symptoms of a bad steering rack though? and i was also thinking about buying the part online cause of all the markups in repair centers. Would you recomend any particular site or actually buying parts online?

Would you still recommend the power steering pump replaced even though there arent any leaks?

-----Question-----
Ive tried reading through some q&a's here in this website about power steering problems but im still looking for the proper direction to point me to.

I have an sc400 which power steering fluids needs to be filled once a week. Had it checked with a mechanic and they found no leaks and recomended the rack to be replaced but im thinking that its just something other mechanics do when they cant pinpoint the real problem which is just to recomend replacing the bulk of the part.

I dunno if this applies to me but an expert in this website said that it may be a vacuum switch near the pump that needs to be replaced and a couple of other lexus owners followed up and affirmed the diagnosis. I  cant seem to find that part so i was hoping you could point me to the proper direction on what part i need to have replaced. It also has a grinding noise when the fluids low and happens usually during cold mornings but im really having no problems as far as the steering is concerned.

Remember the cooling fan is powered by that pump also.
Eh. I know the speed adjustment valve they're talking about, but I've never experianced that failing on anything & dang. Toyota used that thing about about everything they made from the mid 80's to the early 00's.
Personally. I'd probably be with the mechanic on replacing the rack (Sorry. It's expencive... I can't help it!) and replacing the poewrsteering pump too.

But understand I'm not there so this is something that's abit hard to pin down over the internet.

Answer
I would. I know it costs ya about $300, but I'd do it all at once.

Atleast look at it this way. I could rebuild your engine, or transmission from scratch every other month. It still wouldn't average out to a descent monthly car payment. ;)

Shimmy, shakes vibrations.
Hard to steer
Poor retrnability of the system
Abnormal noises
Wandering
Excessive play, or looseness
Rattling in steering gear

And the classic.
Leaks fluid. :)
