Lexus Repair: 1997 SC400- rotating/spinning noise in center console when coasting, toyota lexus, lexus dealer

Question
Thank you for the quick response, I'll check those issues at the local Lexus dealer here in Spokane, WA.

Follow up question: I have put about 3000 miles on the car since the Trans fluid change, if they used the wrong fluid COULD it have compromised the transmission quality, and what damage can using the wrong fluid type cause considering I have driven 3000 miles? Might it have damage the transmission? I guess I should go get the fluid changed again asap just to be safe?

Again thank you very much for your advice!
Brian

Hi Zak,
I have a 1997 SC400 with 73,000 miles that I just bought from a dealer in Oregon. There is a rotating sound that appears like it's coming from under the gear shifter on the console betwen the front seats (it's automatic). When I accelerate the sound stops, when I left off the gas and coast it comes back. It isn't really loud but definetly sounds like something spinning or rotating, it isn't a fast rotating, about 3 per second.

The dealer (Vovlo)did a trans service on the car when I bought it, including replacing the filter. They said they used Toyota fluids  but I couldn't confirm it.

Any idea whats causing it?
Thx, Brian

Hello, Toyota/Lexus Type IV fluid is a must so lets hope they did. Also there is no need to change the filter just drain and fill the fluid (NO FLUSHES) every 15k. The noise may be coming from the drive shaft which is right under there. I would check that and also the rear trans mount to make sure that has not come apart. There are also some shrouds that cover the drive shaft, maybe they bent one a little. If you do not have a good Lexus shop in your area I would rather see you bring it to a Toyota dealer rather than Volvo.

Answer
The trans uses about 8qts and they probably only replaced about 3qts, but over an extended period this will shorten the life of the trans. I have also replaced a few drive shafts for noise and vibrations in the past so you may want to have that checked also.
