Lincoln/Mercury Repair: Taurus transmission, neutral safety switch, ford taurus

Question
I have a 1993 ford taurus wagon with the 3.8 v6 and what appears to be
an AXOD trans. This problem started a year and a half ago. The trans
will some times downshift to second at 15 to 20 mph under light throttle
and then will not upshift to third again until 40 mph. when this
happens there is no forced downshift using the gas pedal. Two weeks ago when
this happened I tried downshifting then upshifting manually and it went to third at 40
mph and then abruptly back to second and would not upshift at all. a
couple of hours later it was shifting fine as it usually does after
shutting it down for a bit. What do you think is happening? I do not think
that this is an electronically controlled trans because I can't find a
speed sensor or anything else plugged in to it besides the neutral
safety switch. Tom

Answer
Hi Tom,

Actually, that is the third generation AXOD-E. Fully electronic and was know for sensor and solenoid issues. I suggest you take it down to a shop that can scan it and see what codes you have. It's likely a bad speed sensor. In that model the speed sensor is cable and electronic. Incidentally, Cottman Transmission will scan it for free.
