Lincoln/Mercury Repair: climate control, lincoln town car, automatic temperature control

Question
I have a 1988 Lincoln town car.  When trying to run the A/C it's constantly switching between hot and cold air  and switches between defrost and center ducts.  I have had the A/C recharged to make sure it's full and the compressor runs ok. (doesn't turn off and on)  Thanks for the help.

Answer
Here is the technical bulletin pertaining to your issue with the A/C:

AIR CONDITIONING - AUTOMATIC TEMPERATURE CONTROL (ATC) - ERRATIC OPERATION - VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 10/05/87
Article No. 88-2-3
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-88 LINCOLN TOWN CARISSUE: Erratic operation of the ATC system may be caused by a loose vacuum hose at the vacuum motor. The loose hose allows vacuum to leak causing the vacuum motor to divert the A/C output to the defroster nozzles instead of to the instrument panel registers. The vacuum hose may loosen if it rubs on the left and right lower instrument panel insulators.

ACTION: To correct this, rework the right and left lower instrument panel insulators using the following service procedure.
FIGURE 11

1. Rework left insulator by trimming a 3" x 1" notch along the shaded edge as shown in Figure 11.

2. Rework right insulator by trimming the shaded corner as shown in Figure 11.

NOTE: The 45 degree trim line is located 1.5 inches from corner of insulator.

As I read it though it might be more pretaining to a climate control modual. Part number E8VY19980B for $116 new from the dealer. Calls for about 42 minutes to install it, a good 6 pack no doubt! LOL
