Lincoln/Mercury Repair: 2000 mercury marquis ls front end, mercury marquis, hi mike

Question
I have a 2000 Mercury Marquis Ls with 49000 miles.  When backing out of the driveway the car hits a small dropoff.  When this happens the is a loud grinding noise coming from the front.  I have pushed hard on the front end thinking it may need shocks, but it seems fine.  The car also rides smoothly.  I have to hit a hard bump or hole to feel it when driving.  Can you tell me what is causing this?

Answer
Hi Mike,

Just too many things in the front end to guess. I suggest taking it to someone that specializes in front ends, not the dealer and not a general repair shop. BTW front end stuff and be very serious, so do not hesitate on getting it looked at.
