Lincoln/Mercury Repair: mercury Sable 93 Not running right, mercury sable, engine temp

Question
I have a 93 Mercury sable LS with a 3.8L. It has the digital instrument cluster. Here lately my speedometer, instant and average mile per gallon, panels got to zero. My ODOMETER and trip meter stop keeping mileage. Oddly enough the distance to empty still runs properly, as well as, engine temp, and the tach.(which is how i have kept up with how fast i am going. It only does this after the car has been driven 15-20 miles after starting. when this happens the transmission jumps as though it doesn't want to change gears on acceleration, which makes for a hassle because i live on top of a mountain and you should try driving uphill in a car that wont let go of the clutch. I need to figure out whats going on with my car before i find myself on the side of the road. thanks for any help you can give.

Answer
Hey Trouble!

That check engine light on your dash will likely indicate you have a bad speed sensor. Ford has thenm in stock and the part number is F1DZ7M101A for $28.64 and calls for about a half hour, 3 or 4 beers to install. Clear the codes by DISCONNECTING BOTH BATTERY TERMINALS and touch them together for about 10 seconds. This should bring your car back in line.
