Lincoln/Mercury Repair: 2000 lincoln continetal check transmission light code, torque convertor, lincoln continetal

Question
My dealer checked the computer & came up wtith code P7144 &
says it is torque converter lock up & that trans must be torn down
for inspection.
Question - the light comes on only intermittently, can it be a
sensor or other elecrical problem.  If it is the torque converter lock
up does this mean the orque converter will not lock up in 4th gear?I
presume it it was otherwise locking up I could not drive. Any other
ideas?

Thanks very much

Answer
Hi Bob,

I am assuming that you meant P1744, since there is not a code P7144... That is excessive convertor slipage. The torque convertor has a set of lock-up clutches inside that come on in any gear at 45mph. If you are in a lower gear than 4th, then it disengages on the shift then re-engages. TC's will come apart and contaminate the entire transmission. Hince, you will need to have your transmission overhauled. But get it out of the dealer! They will be in the $3,000 to $4,000 range. Cottman Transmission will be much less than that and give you a great warranty. If you live in the Vegas area, I would be glad to help. To find a Cottman center near you, Cottman.com.
