Lincoln/Mercury Repair: 1996 Mercury Sable, mercury sable, linkage problem

My 1996 Sable has 148,000 miles and has been well-maintained.  When I parked it in my driveway today, it was fine.  When I got ready to put it in the garage, the transmission lever moves freely with no stops where the positions usually are.  Nothing happens and the car will not move regardless of the shift lever position.  I suspected a linkage problem.  Does this sound like a reasonable conclusion?  Thanks.  Earl

Yes Earl, The grommet on the linkage that connects to the manual lever has said "so long". Easy fix, but you'll need to tow it to a repair facility. I suggest a Cottman Transmission shop if one is near by. 866-cottman then press 1 then your zip. Hope this helped!
