Question -
I have a 94 Saturn SC2 with a manual trans. When ever it's rev'ed it makes a whining noise, somewhat like a vacuum leak. It sounds like it's coming from below the engine at the bell housing. Clutch in/out, in/out of gear, moving or stopped, cold or hot. It's not an exhaust leak. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

Follow-up: Hey Bill, BTW how did I get a Saturn question? hehehe Don't mind helping, just thought it was funny... I am a Lincoln and Mitsu guy. Please resubmit as to how this goes. Thanks again, Ding.
I asked for you because there was no Saturn specialist, and this seamed like a trans problem.
The noise is coming from the bottom rear of the engine, not the front positively. I used a stetiscope to narrow it down to there. I was wondering something in the pressure plate could make this noise or anything in the rear of the engine. Thanks again.

Answer
Hi Bill,

It's the Cluth release bearing or throw out bearing. They are one in the same, some people call it one or the other. Have a clutch assembly installed and this will take care of the noise. Of course, have the folks that do this inspect the TO bearing and the pilot bearing. Might be the pilot bearing. The clutch kit comes with both bearings so you'll be covered. If the guys tell you both bearings look ok, then it could be the front transmission bearing, which will be real expensive to have repaired. Remember to keep your transmission fluid full. Hope this helps!
