Lincoln/Mercury Repair: Bronco, crank shaft, screw driver

Question
Pete,
I know your expertise is in Lincoln repair, but my quwtion is mechanical and fairly generic.
I just put a rebuilt long block 302 EFI engine in my 1990 Full sized Bronco. I can't get it to start. Double checked all my vacuums, electric connections and have good spark, and I'm getting fuel. I have a feeling it is in the distributor when I assembled it. Could I be a gear off when I put it back in the new engine? It acts like it wants to start and fires, but misses, then shuts down within a minute. How do I double check to make sure I properly installed the distributor??? Also, trying to turn the crank shaft by hand with a socket, it seems to be way too tight.
Baffled in Missouri!

Thanks,
Bill
