Lincoln/Mercury Repair: 93 lincoln Continental ,So Worried!, little old lady, emissions control

Question
Hi Pete,

I just purchased a Lincoln Continental Executive Series 1993.  It had appox. 36,000 miles on it (driven exclusively by the little old lady from Pasadena).  I've had the car for one week now and I notice the "check engine" light comes on when I am coasting down on a hill on the freeway, or if I've been driving for a length of time (usually going over 70 mph).  Looks like she had no mechanical repairs on the car, only oil changes.
I bought this car to take me to and from school, so stressed about it, spent just about every dime of my savings.  Could you please let me know if you know anything about this problem?  I believe the manual says it's something to do with the emissions control but it was just smogged in Oct. 2005.  If there is a way to turn this darn thing off, or what?  I would very much appreciate your help- feeling like a very sad and lonely chick in southern California.

Thanks so much again!

Brenda Jean
