Lincoln/Mercury Repair: air conditioning, lincoln town car, freeon

Question
I have a 97 lincoln town car.  A few weeks ago when using my heater there would be noise down by the floor like a clapping sound for a few minutes and then everything would be fine.  It did this for about 2 weeks, then I realized my heater remained on the same temperature no matter what temperature setting I had it on.  If I reduce it to 60 it still blows extremely hot.  If I set it at 85 the temperature is the same.  Of course, the air conditioning is hot.  The noise sounded as if some flap was not opening or something like that.  It was 93 here yesterday and I needed a/c but only received very hot air.  Thank you.  P.S.
There have been no recent repairs except for standard maintenance; (oil changes, etc.)
