Lincoln/Mercury Repair: 94 Lincoln oil pump, lincoln continental, oil pump

Question
I had been having problems with my 94 Lincoln Continental's engine (3.8L) tapping and oil pressure dropping when at idle. Mechanic said it probably needed a new oil pump (144,000 miles).
He put the new pump on and also put on a new sending unit.
The problem I have now is when it's at idle (it still does some tapping) the oil pressure is fine (4 bars), but when I step on the gas it starts dropping. It's just the opposite of what it was. It stays low until I go back to idle, then goes back up.
Engine is getting oil pumped at higher speeds, pressure just dropping for some reason. Mechanic said he's never seen anything like it, says it has to be a bad sending unit.
Any ideas on what could be causing this.

Thanks,
Keith
