Mazda Repair: 1999 Miata Clutch problems, miata clutch, light tug

Question
I started my car yesterday morning in VERY cold weather and heard a horrible screeching sound.  I tried again today, no screech, but after letting it warm up attempted to put it in gear.  No success.  When I turned my car off I was able to do so.  Is this a clutch issue?  And what's the approximate cost to replace?

Answer
The screech and the clutch issue you describe are not related.  The screech, is most likely due to a loose or worn drive belt (alternator or AC-Power Steering).  Visually check them (engine off) for signs of cracking and a light tug can help to see if they are loose.  If you have not replaced them the re usually due around 60k and should be replaced as part of a timing belt service.

A similar noise can be made by the clutch pilot bearing, a support bearing for the input shaft of the transmission which is replaced as part of a clutch mechanical service.  Clutch mechanical work is due around 75-90k miles.  It is a sound that comes and goes as the pedal is depressed and is most notable when the assembly is cold.  (average $650 parts/labor)

The "won't shift into gear" issue you are experiencing is clutch hydraulic related.  The hydraulic system is made up of a Master Cylinder and a Ram Cylinder (also called a slave cylinder).  First open the hood look for the small fluid reservoir located drivers side on the firewall.  Check to see if the fluid level is low or out.  If so add DOT3 or 4 brake fluid to it nd cycle the clutch pedal slowly but repeatedly until the system regains pressure.  A slow leak in this area is common and can be managed until you decide to have the two main components replaced.  Replace them as a pair not just the one that shows sign of leakage.  This occurs every 35-45k miles depending on the type of use. (average $350 parts/labor)

Happy Miataing.
