Mazda Repair: 1992 Mazda Miata, rear main oil seal, mazda miata

Question
How musch does it cost to replace a clutch or could be bearing in a 1992 Miata?  There is a noise when the clutch is released, also the engine light comes on?

Answer
If a clutch release bearing or the pilot bearing are failing a new clutch is the standard procedure since they are all inter related (parts and labor estimate $700-800).  Pilot bearing are more common and tend to sound like a shrill or a squeak mostly when cold and during engagement or disengagement.  A release bearing is more coarse and can be felt in the pedal and heard while holding the pedal down.  In either case the procedure is the same - a new clutch.

Depending upon your mileage the engine rear main oil seal is advisable to be replaced at the same time ($60).  Some shifter and transmission seals are also common and due to the age would resolve any future issues in this area if replaced.  Those items would be the transmission front seal and gasket, the shifter fork boot, the shifter base seal and the shifter body seal (all worth about $100).

The check engine light is not related.  If you have access to a scan checker you can have the fault code read and the system reset.  If the light comes back on and the fault code is the same then the issue can be addressed further.  90-93 models were not plagued with electrical issues so it is likely a random misfire or an emissions system misread.  This is a pre-OBD2 system so it is very simple, it will give a two digit code that I can decipher for you if you forward it to me.
