Mazda Repair: Rotors on a Tribute, mazda tributes, brake pad change

Question
My Mazda Tribute has about 34,000 miles on it. I took it in for service and the mechanic told me that I need new brake pads in the front and back along with new rotors. He said that Mazda Tributes require new rotors with every brake pad change because shaving them can cause them to become too thin and warp. I have never heard such a thing before. Is this true or can I just get the brake pads??

Answer
Rotors tend to last longer than that, 90-100k.  Unless the pads wear thin damaging the rotors.  It is customary to replace rotors rather than to refinish or lathe turn them since the process makes them thinner and thus more prone to warping and heat stress.  That part is correct.

Now since it is a safety item and I am not there to see and inspect the condition I can't tell you he is wrong.  I can tell you that at 34k, if you need brakes already them you brake a lot and your probably quite hard on the system.  No one likes to hear it but your braking habits may have an adverse affect on the system.  The hard you use them the more heat stress they undergo and thus it affects the pads life and the rotors life.

The car is engineered well.
