Mazda Repair: Windsheild wipers on Mazda Protege, splined shaft, motor shaft

Question
Hi, I was driving during a rainstorm and turned on the wipers. They worked fine for several minutes and then stopped completely. I can hear the motor turning if the wipers are on and they will occasionally catch and run half a windshield worth. Can I fix this myself or should I take it to a shop?  Thank you in advance.

Answer
Not my area of expertise but, raise the hood, look under the windshield at the wiper arm linkage follow it to the motor.  There is a nut that holds the linkage to the motor it has a splined shaft.  I sounds like the nut may have loosened allowing the linkage to slip on the motor shaft.  If so refit it then tighten it up.
