Mazda Repair: 1996 626 6 cyl. 5 speed clutch problem, clutch slave cylinder, slave cylinder replacement

Question
Clutch has been "grabbing" near the floor. The car has sat most of the winter and now with the clutch to the floor it is not fully disengaging. Is there an adjustment or does it need fluid or am I in for a repair?

Answer
You probably have a leaky clutch slave cylinder. It could be the master cylinder, but that is generally not the case. It is also very likely that you are low on fluid.

The average shade tree mechanic can handle a slave cylinder replacement. It doesn't require that the transmission be removed or anything like that.

The fluid is the same thing as brake fluid. It's cheap. Buy a full quart. You never know when you'll need it again. However, one thing you do know is that you will not want to take a trip to the auto parts store.
