Mazda Repair: 1991 Mazda Protege, weather striping, poor drainage

Question
I just bought a 1991 Mazda Protege 4door, the car is in good condition but there is a leak in the trunk.  the previous owner said she had gotten that fixed about a year ago (they replaced the weather striping) but the leak is back.  when i looked it seemed that the water was coming in by were the trunck latch and release is.  How do i fix this? Is this a comon prob. for mazda? I hope you can help me, thanks.

Answer
In my experience with rotary powered Mazdas, it is extremely uncommon for water to leak into the interior compartments of the car. However, that does not mean that it is impossible.

I am more knowledgeable with rotary powered cars, so bear with me. One thing that will cause a trunk to leak is poor drainage from the sill around the seal. If it is possible for water to collect around the seal rather than drain away, then the seal will leak regardless of its condition. debris built up around the seal such as leaves or mold can cause this. Also, if there are any drain holes around the seal, they can plug-up and cause leakage as well.

Also, it is possible that a different seal is leaking. The seals around the tail lights and trunk lock can also be leaking.
