I just took my car for an emmisions test and it failed due to a code P0421 warm up catalyst efficiency below threshold and P0171 system too lean bank. What do these mean.

hi maria, i'm assuming this is a 4 cyl engine. seen this problem many times. po171 is most likely a leaking intake manifold gasket, which will then set a po421 cat code.

expect to pay anywhere from 250-300$ gasket is 15$ labor 3.0 hrs at 84$.. this repair may fix the p.m. code or may need a manifold cat converter also. i don't know how many miles on your vehicle, or if's a federal or California emissions engine, fed cat is under emissions warrantee for 8 Ayers, 80k miles.
