my son parked his car said it was running fine awhile went to leave put it in drive nothing put it in reverse nothing i can see the linkage shifting on the trany   the hold light on the dash is flashing continuosly and the button on the shifter has no affect on it thank you

Hi James thanks for asking.
Sorry to say this but this seems like there is an internal faliur with the transmsion. It may be repairable, but most peolpe just put a used transmision in becaue it is an old vehicle. but if the car is in good shape then it may be worth having a transmission specialist look at it and see if it only a shift solenoid gone or something along those lines,
